The New York Historical Society was formed in 1804, by New Yorker’s including Mayor De Witt Clinton.  The New York Historical Society is the oldest museum in operation in the city and the second oldest-historical society in the United States.  Their mission is to preserve materials focusing on New York State history.  In addition to exhibitions the New York Historical Society has a research library which contains a major collection of 18th century newspapers.
