The 21st Annual New York Cares winter coat drive is happening December 1-31st, 2009. During this time donate your gently used coat so that the 90% of homeless, and thousands of poor New Yorker’s will have an opportunity to stay warm during the winter months.

New York Cares collects nearly 70,000 gently used winter coats each December and distributes them to thousands of men, women, and children who would otherwise be cold.

There are many ways that you can help your fellow new yorkers.

You can organize your own coat drive in your neighborhood or workplace, donate your old coat, or make a financial donation to New York Cares. Check out their website for more info.

The City is considering dusting Ferry Service from the dustbin of NYC history, and wants New Yorker’s input.  The event is Hosted by City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and co-hosted by City Council Members Jessica Lappin and Dan Garodnickon.  The Manhattan Public Meeting will be held on Monday, October 5, 2009 – From 5:30PM to 7:30PM.

The second annual Summer Streets starts today and for the next three Saturdays throughout the city.  Take your streets back from the tyranny of the automobile.  Nearly 7 miles of car free streets. Routes include, Lafayette Street – 4th Avenue – Park Avenue – 72nd Street – Central Park with bike lane and low-traffic connections to Harlem, Brooklyn, Queens, Governors Island and the West Side Greenway.

New York City’s Apartment Building Recycling Initiative (ABRI) is looking for volunteers. If you’re passionate about recycling, and want to see more recycling in your building consider signing up with the NYC ABRI and attend a training session. At the session you’ll learn how to educate other tenants in your building about waste prevention and recycling. After the training, Sanitation Outreach Coordinators will visit your building to see how recycling is set up and what you can do to encourage more recycling.

This Sunday July 12th, indulge in your french side by attending Bastille Day this Sunday Juli 12, 2009 from 12-6pm.  This “Street Fair with French Flair” is an annual event in which you can be French for a day.  Yummy.

The Biggest Fireworks Display in America will be at The Hudson River this year.  Celebrating America’s 233rd Birthday and the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson’s voyage up the the river that bears his name.

The Central Park Conservancy will host an Earth Day Celebration at Central Park’s historic concertgrounds and surrounding landscapes in the heart of Central Park on Sunday, April 26th from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Pack a picnic and bring a blanket as we celebrate with live performances, planting and mulching projects, tree care and composting demonstrations, environmental education, and crafts with recycled materials. The Homeless Outreach Population Estimate (HOPE) is the annual survey conducted by the New York City Department of Homeless Services.  The success of HOPE is dependent on New Yorker’s volunteering.  This year HOPE is looking for 2,500 New Yorkers to canvass parks, subways, and other public spaces to count the number of homeless people in the City.

Volunteers are strategically  sent throughout the City to provide the most accurate estimate of our Homeless population.  The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development considers NYC’s method of counting the homeless to be the most accurate in the nation.

HOPE 2009 is still looking for volunteers in the Bronx, Queens, and Staten Island.

The origins of NYC Restaurant Week dates back to 1992 as a way to welcome the Democratic delegates to NYC.  Although it was intended as a one time event for out of towners,  New Yorkers quickly made it their own.  Seventeen years later Restaurant Week is as strong as ever.  In a clear sign that the economic stress has hit the top city dining places, for the first time this year many of the participating restaurants are adding Sundays.

Now, what do we have to do to get a “Broadway Week” started.  Any ideas?

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg today announced that a special election for Council Member for the twenty-first, thirty-second and forty-ninth Council districts will be held on Tuesday, February 24th, 2009.

The special election will fill vacancies that were created at midnight on December 31st, 2008 by the resignation of Hiram Monserrate in the twenty-first Council district and Joseph P. Addabbo in the thirty-second Council district; as well as a vacancy created at midnight on January 2nd, 2009 by the resignation of Michael E. McMahon in the forty-ninth Council district.

The February 24th election will elect council members that will serve until December 31st, 2009. Pursuant to the City Charter, the nomination of candidates in this election will be by independent nominating petition.

But it’s not just homeless people who need our help; thousands of New Yorkers are forced to make a choice between buying a winter coat and putting food on the table, or meeting other basic survival needs.

Each December, New York Cares collects nearly 80,000 gently used winter coats and distributes them to thousands of men, women, and children who would otherwise go without.

Donate your extra coat if you have one.  If not, you can volunteer your time at a coat collection center or host one of your own.  See the NyCares.org website for more info
