But for those who happen to venture inside for a taste of the vegetarian Indian fare are in for a homemade treat, just like mata used to make. The best part? You can experience this all for under $10 for a full meal – representing one of the best budget eats in town.

Johal’s hole-in-the-wall decor brings to mind some of the finer hidden curry spots in London’s East End, with about 4 tables in the small dining room and plastic cultery for digging into your chana masala. It’s counter service, and you’ll find about 6-7 vegetable dishes to chose from. The staff will give you a tour of what’s on offer, as the menu changes daily. For the bargain basement price of $5, you can chose 2 filling veggie dishes accompanied with rice or freshly fried roti bread and a small salad. Beyond the veggie dishes, there are samosa and pakora available (a steal at a buck apiece). Pair these with some homemade chutney as it is not to be missed. After all this if you’re still hungry for dessert, Johal offers a wide variety of Indian sweets, also priced at $1. Value and taste make this place one of New York’s hidden gems.

Pros: cheap eats, homemade, satisfying portions, A+ chutney, authentic masala chai tea, takeout or eat-in, pleasant staff

Cons: service can be slow (limited staff), not currently offering delivery, cash-only

Johal Deli
(212) 222-2636
Manhattan – Morningside Heights, Upper West Side
Subway: 1 to 103rd St.
Bus: M10 to 103rd St.
945 Columbus Ave (between 106 and 107)
New York, NY 10025

CLOSED Angelina Pizzabar (Broadway between 104th & 105th)

Eat

Italian

Pizza

104th and Broadway

Columbia University

italian

Manhattan

morningside heights

pasta

sidewalk cafe

upper west side

wine bar

In a city known for its pies and slices, the Upper West Side has long been a desert for pizza-lovers. At long last, Angelina Pizzabar is here to change that. I’ll admit it was not without trepidation that I tried this new pizzeria with a wine-bar vibe. Having been disappointed in the past, we hesitantly arrived at 104th and Broadway on a Sunday night to a packed restaurant which had only opened its doors 10 days before. This glimmer of hope was brightened by the delightful smells that greeted us as soon as we stepped inside. The space, larger than it appeared from outside and decorated with a warm, rustic yet modern feel, stretched back past a wide wooden bar. A wood-fired pizza oven glowed from a far corner, amply staffed by several pros tossing pizza dough in the air.

A Slice of Cheese Pizza

This being the recession, we opted for a carafe of the house white ($18) and a simple pepperoni pie ($14, $1 for extra toppings). A generous litre of a delicate, fruity white vino arrived at our table, enough for 3 glasses each between the two of us. Encouraged by the delicious dishes being delivered to other patrons (Angelina Pizza Bar has several homemade pasta dishes on the menu as well), we eagerly awaited our pie. Our Italian wai

tress soon delivered an enormous pie to our table. What followed was, quite simply, pizza perfection. Light and fluffy crust, a sauce that could rival the best of Napoli, and a rich (but not overly salty) cheese all merged together to erase a lifetime of mediocre Upper West Side pizza memories. Angelina Pizzabar, which brands

itself as “old-fashioned pizza” is better described as “timeless”.
